I use Arcade Convoy Radio to keep a mixed music collection moving while I play games. It can mix MIDI, tracker music, MP3 and FLAC files, and internet radio in the same collection. Here are the main music types I use and some of the ways I find material for the collection.
Arcade Convoy Radio can play four types of music: Midi, Tracker, MP3, and Internet Radio. Midi music, popular during the early days of arcade and console games, is small but impactful. It represents musical notes, making it compact yet capable of producing engaging tunes. The Midi format allows the use of sound fonts, altering the way your Midi songs sound. Arcade Convoy supports an unlimited number of sound fonts, randomly picking and switching them for added variety.
Tracker music, slightly larger than Midi but smaller than MP3, offers loops that enable limited lyrics and plenty of beats. This music type was popular in early arcade and CD-ROM games, offering a broad selection to choose from.
MP3s, the most modern gaming music format, are larger but more diverse. They can encompass game songs, chiptunes, top 40 hits, and more. Arcade Convoy Radio supports all MP3 formats, including FLAC.
Finally, we have the latest music format, streaming music. While we don’t support Spotify yet, we do let you add Internet Radio stations. Arcade Convoy Radio allows you to add radio stations from all over the globe, providing a vast array of music styles.
Finding killer tunes to add to your Arcade Convoy Radio is a fun task. Midi’s and Tracker music are readily available on the web. When searching for these, consider looking for pop songs, game music, TV show themes, or originals. For Midi’s, you’ll need sound fonts (SF2 files) to play the notes. These can range in size and are available across the web.
For Tracker music, search for ‘tracker music’, ‘modular music’, or ‘MOD music’. A useful tip is to search for ‘Chiptune music’, which generally indicates good gaming music. For MP3s, I like to search for Chiptunes. you can find plenty of mp3’s that are legal.
To add your favorite radio stations, I use Radio Garden to find cool radio stations, then look on https://streamurl.link/, a radio stream URL search engine. If you can’t find the URL there, you can usually find it on the radio station’s website or by inspecting the website. Searching ‘How to get a URL for an internet radio station’ will tell you how to get the url.
